XO - Farinatti Design

XO nasce nel 2021 per Vanità & Casa: uno specchio circolare che affronta un tema preciso, quello del rapporto tra luce e riflessione, tra funzione e decoro. La geometria generale è essenziale, ma il bordo viene progettato come una soglia attiva, un margine capace di costruire identità senza appesantire l'oggetto.

The project's distinctive feature is a pattern of small curves, the same ideal diameter as the mirror, arranged in a pattern that recalls a stylized X along the entire circumference. When the light is turned on, this design transforms into a calibrated ring of light, clear but unobtrusive, capable of precisely defining the space.

XO is the first mirror to feature Vanità & Casa's Ghost technology. Unlike conventional LED systems, when the mirror is turned off, the light doesn't leave the typical milky or whitish surface that disrupts the quality of the reflection. In this project, however, I chose a minimal presence, almost a testimony: a very subtle variation in the reflection that, when the lights are off, becomes part of the object's decorative character and anticipates the light without overtly declaring it.

Precisely for this ability to combine formal sobriety, perceptive quality and adaptability to different contexts, XO was selected in the ADI Design Index 2022, entering the scope of nominations for the Compasso d'Oro.

Strategy

Design a mirror with a strong formal recognition, yet capable of fitting naturally into different contexts, from residential to hospitality.

Introduce Ghost technology in a primary and immediate form, making its value perceptible through sober, non-demonstrative language.

Transforming the edge from a simple finish to an identifying device, where light and decoration coincide in a single design gesture.

To offer the brand an elegant and versatile product, suitable for creating continuity between the bathroom collection and larger contemporary living spaces.

Design

The circular shape defines an essential, stable, easily readable object, suitable for interacting with different architectures and furnishings.

The edge is constructed through a sequence of small curved sectors that ideally intersect in a stylised X and develop along the entire circumference.

The light is not treated as simple backlighting, but as an integrated ornamental element, capable of emerging with precision when active and leaving, when turned off, only a minimal and controlled trace.

The use of glass, reflective film, and aluminum strikes a balance between perceptual quality, construction precision, industrial consistency, and low environmental impact.

The 900 and 1200 mm diameter configurations expand the product's adaptability and strengthen its transversal vocation.

Results

XO introduces a measured language to the Vanità & Casa catalogue, in which technological innovation and formal sobriety coincide.

The product generates a complex surprise effect: the light appears as a precise, elegant, never redundant presence.

Ghost technology improves the perceptual quality of the mirror when the lights are off, preserving the continuity of the reflective surface.

The selection in the ADI Design Index 2022 confirms the project's relevance in terms of design and research applied to the product.

The subsequent proposal of the product also under the Vanità Living brand testifies to its ability to extend beyond the bathroom environment.
