Maniglia Elby su porta di stanza ospedaliera con segnaletica patient suite, ambiente pulito e luminoso

Elby was born from a silent tension between gesture and matter, between habit and awareness. In an age when contact has become a measure of risk, the project confronts a basic act—opening a door—to rewrite its modalities without altering its naturalness.

It does not introduce a new object, but modifies a consolidated grammar, operating with surgical precision on what we take for granted.

Every handle is a threshold. Not just physical, but relational. It is the point where the body meets space.

During the pandemic, this point of contact has taken on new meanings: distance, attention, caution. Elby was born from this condition, but it does not limit itself to responding to an emergency. Rather, it translates a cultural transformation into a stable sign.

The object remains familiar, almost anonymous in its presence. Yet it introduces a deviation: a slight inclination that suggests another way of acting. The gesture moves from the hand to the arm, from the palm to the elbow. It's a subtle change, but enough to redefine the experience.

Strategy

The project is based on a strategy of subtraction and precision:

Reduce contact without introducing complexity

Extend accessibility to users with different motor abilities

Maintain the typological continuity of the traditional handle

It's not about innovating through excess, but about working on the essential, so that the change is immediately legible and intuitive.

Design

The shape comes from a pill-shaped section (20 × 15 mm), chosen for its ergonomic quality and the visual continuity it guarantees.

The short length (170 mm) maintains a balance between presence and discretion.

The generating element of the project is the short terminal extension inclined upwards. This geometric gap:

intercepts the elbow naturally

guide the downward movement

prevents slipping

makes the new gesture of use explicit

The surfaces are continuous, without superfluous discontinuities. The drawing does not seek expressiveness, but precision.

Elby is designed as an open system, available in different finishes to adapt to domestic, hospitality, office and healthcare environments.

Results

Elby demonstrates how a minimal change can generate profound change.

It introduces a new behavior without requiring learning.

Reduces contact without emphasizing.

Expand accessibility without saying it.

It is an object that does not impose, but guides.

Which does not exhibit, but suggests.

And in this balance, it redefines the relationship between body, gesture and space.
